Behind the scenes / The Hollow Grind

More than a knife store.
A workshop behind it.

Some of the most important work we do happens after a knife leaves the store. Here’s a look inside the garage machine shop that helps us support our customers.

Why we built it

A good knife deserves another chance.

A knife can need help long after its warranty ends. Sometimes, getting support from the original maker or manufacturer proves difficult. That’s a big part of why we have a fully equipped machine shop in our garage.

It gives us a way to tackle repairs and customization for our customers. We aren’t miracle workers, but we’ve brought quite a few knives back from the brink of disaster to almost-new condition.

When you buy from us, you get more than the knife. You get the support behind it.

The person behind the work

Meet Robert Petron of RP24 Customs.

Robert runs the shop behind the scenes. He’s one of the most talented people we know in this field, even if his name isn’t one you’ve heard yet. Over the years, he’s figured out techniques, solved tough problems, and developed methods of his own.

His journey started with a few 9-volt batteries and an interest in anodizing titanium. Seeing how far that curiosity has taken him is pretty impressive.

Inside the garage

Small shop. Serious equipment.

Here’s what we have on the work floor:

Grinding & machining

  • Two 2 × 72 grinders — one fixed, one tilting
  • Manual milling machine
  • Manual lathe
  • Surface grinder

Finishing & customization

  • Sandblasting cabinet with different media
  • 60W MOPA fiber laser
  • Titanium anodizing equipment

Heat treatment & testing

  • Heat-treat oven
  • Metal hardness (HRC) tester

Support beyond the sale.

That’s what this shop is really about. The equipment matters, but having someone who knows how to use it — and cares about getting your knife back into shape — is what makes the difference.
